In-situ Raman Spectroscopic Characterisation of Polymers Used in past Conservation Treatments

چکیده
This paper reports the successful characterisation of polymers from past conservation treatments using Raman spectroscopy with a fibre-optic probe. It has been demonstrated for the first time that this methodology is well suited to the in-situ examination of polymers used as adhesives and gapfillers for conservation of glass artefacts. By means of a Raman spectroscopic instrument with a fibre-optic probe, conservation polymer spectra were recorded non-destructively, with a spectral resolution of 2 cm-1 in the range 2003200 cm-1. Polymer identification proved straightforward for gap-fillers and, for adhesives, different polymers were also successfully distinguished, even in a glass / adhesive / glass bond less than 100 μm in width. In addition to polymer identification, Fe2O3 was identified as the pigment not only in restored areas but also in the original grisaille paint for the grey toning for the glass pictorial scene.

Bioactive materials including glass and glass-ceramics are nowadays used as medical implants for orthopedic applications. In this study several samples of glass-ceramics have been prepared using both heat treatment and sol-gel processes. The structure and bioactivity of these samples based on their interaction with simulated body fluid (SBF) have been determined. In-vitor, using the Raman s...
متن کاملIn Situ Cross-Linking of Polyanionic Polymers to Sustain the Drug Release from Theophylline Tablets
The aim of this study was to develop an extended-release tablet formulation using a new in situ cross-linking method. The effects of polyvalent cations on theophylline release from tablets made with the polyanionic polymers sodium alginate and sodium carboxymethylcellulose, were investigated. Different miliequivalents of the di and tri-valent cation, Ca2+ and Al3+, were added to tablet form...

متن کاملThe Use of Portable Raman Spectroscopy to Identify Conservation Treatments Applied to Heritage Stone
Non-destructive in situ analysis of materials is highly desirable in cultural heritage studies, for it precludes the need for intensive sampling. The present study focused on the usability of Raman spectrometers, which can provide such analysis, in the identification of conservation treatments applied to stone materials forming part of the architectural heritage. Two products commonly used to c...
